Creative Habitat Corp. Habitat Improvement projects

Dutchess County, NY, 1996
Hudsonia Ltd., an ecological research organization, retained Creative Habitat as a specialty consultant to assist in a precedent setting wetland mitigation project, involving the creation of upland and wetland habitat for the New York state threatened Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii). We developed construction specifications and planting plans, and provided onsite project supervision. The design involved large scale plant salvage, soil salvage, upland slope erosion control, upland slope stabilization, streambank stabilization, upland turtle breeding habitat as well as wetlands with specialized conditions favored by these turtles. The requirements involved the instantaneous (re-)construction of shrub and tree dominated vernal pools. Many of the design criteria were unprecedented. Three years later it is evident that the project has succeeded in its attempted habitat restoration goals. Turtles have been recorded nesting and residing within the restoration site. The project was awarded the 1997 national SER Project Facilitation Award.
